New robotic "agent" learns from zebrafish to improve swimming mechanism

Not long ago, a humanoid robot had just obtained citizenship, but there was still a long way to go before the robot and real people could not be separated. However, it is clear that fish are more likely to be "fooled" because a team from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) has successfully integrated a rogue robot into the zebrafish school of fish.

This brand new robot is like a social experiment. It was designed as an "agent" and added it to the fish school to see if it could learn to communicate and move like a real fish and influence the behavior of the school of fish. In the past, researchers at the EPFL robotics lab managed to infiltrate robots into the “community” of the skeleton.

Frank Bonnet, author of the study, said: "Fish is a very complex animal. In order to integrate into the insect community, robots only need to release certain 'pheromones', but integration into a vertebrate community seems to involve more standards, such as the appearance of , motion, vibration, etc.

To help robotic fish pass the "entry examination", the team established a robotic fish with the same color, shape, proportion, and fringe pattern as the zebrafish, measuring 7 centimeters (2.8 inches) in length. In order to ensure the realistic movement of the robot, the researchers studied the behavior of fish, including line speed, acceleration, vibration, tail movement rhythm, fish size and individual swimming distance.

The machine zebrafish is mounted on a small rod that slides along the bottom of the aquarium and is magnetically connected to a small engine that drags the robot through the water. The tail of the robotic fish is still rocking from side to side, giving the impression that robotic fish are swimming. Over time, robotic fish learn from the school of fish to improve its swimming mechanism.

The team conducted a maze test using robotic fish and 10 different zebrafish fish groups in an aquarium. They recorded the movement of the entire fish population and the individual zebrafish therein, as well as the integration of robotic fish and animals, and compared the results with five other zebrafish fish populations without the robotic fish "invaders." The researchers found that the performance of the fish in the machine fish was basically the same as that of fish without the robotic fish.

Bonnet said: “The zebrafish easily accepts robotic fish in fish schools. Robotic fish can also imitate the behavior of zebrafish, prompting them to change direction, or swim from one room to another.”

The results of the study will not only help scientists study the social behavior of fish, but also make bio-heuristic robots more realistic.

The research was published in the journal "Bioinspiration & Biomimetics".
