At the annual press conference, the Volkswagen Group announced its ambitious plan to produce electric vehicles at 16 global manufacturing facilities by 2022. The company also revealed that it has selected key partners to invest 20 billion euros in battery development and related technologies for electric vehicle projects in Europe and China, with plans to expand investment into North America soon.
According to the roadmap, by 2025, the Group’s 12 brands will introduce over 80 new electric models, including 50 all-electric vehicles and 30 plug-in hybrids, with an annual production target of 3 million units. Starting next year, Volkswagen aims to launch a new electric car almost every month. “This is how we intend to offer the world’s most comprehensive lineup of electric vehicles,†said CEO Herbert Diess.
By 2030, the Group expects to have more electric models available than ever before, with at least one electric version of each of its 300 global models across all segments. The ID sub-brand is dedicated entirely to battery electric vehicles, with the first model, the ID. Neo hatchback, set to go on sale in 2020. Audi will also unveil its all-electric E-Tron SUV by the end of this year.
Since the emissions scandal in September 2015, when Volkswagen admitted to installing software to cheat emissions tests on diesel cars, the company has faced intense pressure. Shifting toward zero-emission electric vehicles has become a critical part of its strategy to rebuild trust and restore its reputation.
However, the company has not abandoned internal combustion engines or diesel technology. CEO Diess emphasized that both can continue to evolve. “We are investing heavily to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. I believe that as long as diesel vehicles remain relevant, modern internal combustion engines can still be a viable solution without becoming a problem themselves.â€
