At the annual press conference, Volkswagen Group announced its ambitious plan to produce electric vehicles at 16 global manufacturing sites by 2022. The company also revealed that it has selected key partners to invest 20 billion euros in battery development and related technologies for electric vehicle projects in Europe and China. The North American market is set to follow soon, signaling a major shift in the company’s long-term strategy.
According to the roadmap, by 2025, Volkswagen’s 12 brands will introduce over 80 new electric models, including 50 fully electric vehicles and 30 plug-in hybrids, with an annual production target of 3 million units. This aggressive expansion aims to solidify the company’s position as a leader in the global EV market.
Starting next year, Volkswagen plans to launch a new electric car almost every month. “This is how we intend to offer the world’s largest lineup of electric vehicles,†said CEO Herbert Diess. The goal is not just to keep up with the competition but to lead the transition to sustainable mobility.
By 2030, the company aims to have more electric models available than ever before. With 300 models across all segments, each will have at least one electric variant, ensuring that no customer segment is left behind in the shift toward electrification.
The ID. sub-brand has been specifically designed for battery-electric vehicles. The first model, the ID. Neo hatchback, will go on sale in 2020. Meanwhile, Audi will debut its all-electric E-Tron SUV by the end of this year, further expanding the group’s electric portfolio.
Since the 2015 emissions scandal, when Volkswagen admitted to installing software that cheated on diesel emissions tests, the company has faced intense scrutiny and pressure. Transitioning to zero-emission vehicles is a crucial step in rebuilding trust and restoring its brand image.
Despite this focus on electrification, Volkswagen is not completely abandoning internal combustion engines. CEO Diess emphasized that both technologies can continue to evolve. “We are investing heavily to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. I believe that modern diesel vehicles can still be a viable solution, and they should not become a problem themselves.†This balanced approach reflects the company’s commitment to offering diverse options for different markets and consumer needs.
