IR Introduces Minimal PFC Boost IC in 5-Pin SOT-23 Package

International Rectifier (IR), a global power semiconductor and management solutions company, introduces the industry's smallest power factor correction (PFC) boost IC in a 5-pin SOT-23 package, the IRS2505LTRPBF for Switch Mode Power Supplies (SMPS). Applications such as LED drivers, fluorescent lamps and HID electronic ballasts.

The IRS2505L expands IR's μPFCTMPFC control IC family with a new control system that deploys PFC controllers in just five pins, dramatically reducing overall system size, component count and system cost. The IRS2505L can also operate in a critical conduction boost PFC, buck or flyback configuration.

The IC includes a natural frequency oscillator and has a switching time control function for the boost power MOSFET. The turn-on time function is used to maintain an accurate and constant DC bus output voltage and to provide sinusoidal AC input current for high power factor and ultra-low total harmonic distortion (THD). The turn-off time function is dependent on the inductor current zero-crossing detection circuit that does not require the secondary winding, which further reduces the number of components.

The IRS2505L offers a wide range of input voltages and load ranges, regulated DC bus output voltage, and programmable DC bus voltage levels. The device also provides DC bus overvoltage protection, programmable MOSFET overcurrent protection, and integrated ESD protection for all pins. Other features include micropower start-up current, 20.8V internal Zener clamp on VCC, and latching immunity for all inputs and outputs. The new device is lead free and complies with the RoHS Directive for Electronic Products.
