The IoT market is experiencing explosive growth, and the challenge for developers is how to build simple, powerful infrastructure with limited resources. The RN2483 module comes with the LoRaWANTM protocol stack, which makes it easy to connect to the rapidly growing LoRa Alliance infrastructure – including privately managed local area networks (LANs) and public networks operated by telecommunications companies – to create nationwide low-power Wide area network (LPWAN). The integration of the protocol stack allows the module to be used with any microcontroller with a UART interface, including hundreds of Microchip PIC® MCUs. In addition, the RN2483 comes with Microchip's simple ASCII command interface for easy configuration and control.

Compared to other wireless systems, LoRa technology has the following advantages. It uses spread-spectrum modulation to demodulate noise below 20 dB. This ensures a highly sensitive, reliable network connection while increasing network efficiency and eliminating interference. Compared to mesh networks, the LoRaWAN protocol's star topology eliminates synchronization overhead and hop count, thereby reducing power consumption and allowing multiple concurrent applications to run on the network. At the same time, LoRa technology achieves a much longer communication distance than other wireless protocols, which allows the RN2483 to operate without a repeater, reducing overall cost of ownership. In addition, compared to 3G and 4G cellular networks, LoRa technology is more scalable and cost-effective for embedded applications.

The RN2483 module solves the long-standing dilemma of wireless application developers, that is, designers can only choose between longer distances and lower power consumption. With LoRa technology, designers can now do both, maximizing longer-distance communication and lower power consumption while saving additional repeater costs. In addition, the RN2483 helps them use AES-128 encryption to secure network communications.

With scalability, reliable communication performance, mobility, and the ability to operate in harsh outdoor environments, the RN2483 is ideal for a wide range of low data rate wireless monitoring and control designs. Examples of IoT and M2M applications include: smart cities (street lights, parking and traffic sensors), energy metering (electric/water/gas smart meters), and industrial/commercial/home automation (HVAC controls, smart appliances, security systems and lighting), etc. .

Supply

Public beta customers can now contact Microchip's field sales staff for samples of the RN2483. Full supply is expected to begin in May, starting at a minimum of 1,000. The relevant development board is also expected to be available in May, when designers will be able to take advantage of Microchip's proven, free MPLAB® integrated development environment.
